"Helping each child to realise his or her utmost potential"
Hi, I am Miss Jennifer Koh, turned 32 in Nov 2014. Parents and their children may now refer me to as Mrs. Jennifer Tan. (",) I have had 17 years of tutoring and teaching experience ever since I started to tutor my neighbour's daughter and helped one of my cousins in her school work in 1999. I have home tutored a child as young as K1 to as adolescent as 'O' levels and have an MOE-approved certificate that allows me to teach English up to 'O' levels and E Maths up to Sec 3 level.
I do teach Chinese and Higher Chinese as well (from P1 to P6 over the years).
Being musically-inclined and having graduated with Grade 8 certificates from London College of Music and Media, I did serve a 1 year contract teaching on Sundays only at Cristofori Music School soon after I graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic in June 2004.
My students enjoy my lessons as I use creative methods to help them remember what they are learning at the moment, for eg. using mind maps and acronyms to help them remember how to tackle Secondary Humanities subjects questions, as well as how a particular Chinese character is written and the 'why' behind writing a particular Chinese character a particular way.
I had studied Higher Chinese for 'A' levels when I was in JC 1 (9 months from April till end of year 2000) in Temasek JC before I decided to switch to a Poly Course the following year.
I also do quite a lot of vocabulary enrichment for students taking the subject English with me as well as hone them quite a lot in Comprehension and Composition Writing.
For Mathematics, I explain to the student how to go about solving the sum using various skills, for eg. drawing models (Primary level) and solving using algebra (Secondary level). I also instill in them heuristic skills and let them enjoy solving IQ questions. In 2010, I taught Primary School Mathematics (all 6 levels) at two branches of a tuition franchise as well as Sec 2 Maths for the year 2010.
This year, after I rejoined Learning @ the Pinnacle opposite my house as a Sec 3 English (Group Tuition) Classroom Teacher, I also reliefed my fellow female Indian Colleague in classroom teaching for Pri 6, Sec 2 and Sec 3 E Maths from the last 2 weeks of April till the end of July as she went to give birth and took maternity leave.
Overall, I feel that I have a lot to offer your child with my many years of teaching and tutoring experience; am also very patient with kids and feel a sense of achievement when my students get much benefit from my lessons or improve their grades tremendously after being under my tutelage.
1. My first student, a left-handed boy named Ng Guang Yi from Kong Hua Primary School and whom I taught P2 to P5 English from 2001 to 2004, did well enough in his PSLE to enter Dunman High School. He's now serving NS as a Combat Engineer.
2. His two much younger female cousins from Marsiling Primary School, who are Malaysians, came to my house on Sundays for home tuition in English and Maths from Feb 2009 to July 2010. They enjoyed my lessons a lot as I am patient with young children and help them to enjoy the learning process. For their end-of-year exams in 2009, their English and Maths improved from failure grades to 60 plus marks for English especially and Maths (the younger one scored 90 plus marks while her elder sister scored 80 plus marks).
3. A Mainland Chinese boy from Tianjin, whom I taught from September 2009 to May 2010, did splendidly in his P4 (2009) end of year exams in English (he improved quite a bit from 60 plus marks to 80 marks), came in first in his class and could study Higher Chinese for his P5 and P6 years. His mother stopped his home tuition in May 2010 as she had decided to enroll him in a many students' environment in Kumon English and Maths.
4. One of the foreign students I tutored in May 2011 till September 2012 was a Filipino boy in the subject Chinese. I made him read a lot of Chinese comprehensions out loud and corrected his wrong pronunciation. For the year 2011, I managed to help him maintain his grade of 65 marks for Chinese for his CA2 exams, and his grades for SA2 had improved slightly as well. In his P4 year, he improved in his CA1 to attain 70 marks, scoring a Band 2 for the first time. His parents were satisfied and his younger sister in K2 (2012) also became my student since beginning of 2012 till late September 2012, when I had to stop tutoring for about 2 weeks as I was admitted into hospital for relapse of a leg injury. Her teacher sang praises of her getting full marks for weekly Chinese spelling during the Parent-Teacher meeting in August.
5. My Nepalese-Chinese boy started out with me in February 2011 when he was in Primary 3, being very hesitant in reading out in Mandarin from his textbooks and assessment books. After much encouragement and providing him with other reading materials like Chinese 'Health' Newspaper and photocopied material from Chinese books, he has gained confidence in reading and asks questions to clear his doubts. He improved from a 'just-pass' grade for his P3 Chinese in CA1 to 42/45 marks in his P4 Mid-Year Exams and 80% in his CA2 exams.
6. Two P6 cousins whom I tutored together in preparation for their PSLE English got very good marks for their English subject -- 1 of them scored an A*, the other scored an A, for 2012's PSLE. Their eldest cousin, who is the elder brother of the female P6 cousin, is currently in Sec 3 and also did Private Home Tuition with me for Sec 2 English last year.
7.This year, I'm tutoring a Sec 1 Woodlands Ring Sec Sch Sec 1 girl, who improved from a 'B3' grade --66 marks upon 100 in Mid-Yr exams, to an 'A2' grade -- 73 marks, for her CA2. She is currently doing her final year exams and has stopped her Saturday 4 to 5.30pm lessons temporarily for 2 weeks. ---update (2017) This girl did English home tuition with me throughout her Sec sch years and has been rather consistent in her grades. She scored an expected B3 grade for her 'O' level English for year 2016. She is now currently enjoying her JC life in Innova Junior College.
8. Throughout my years of teaching and tutoring, I have helped numerous students enter Singapore Government Primary and Secondary Schools during the 2 years that I worked at Spring College International and also home tutored and group-tutored many students at KRTC (Yishun and Sembawang) and Learning at the Pinnacle (Mid-2005 to 1st Quarter of 2007 and then again from 2013 to 2014).
I had been a reporter of Temasek Times, the newsletter of Temasek Junior College (I was there in year 2000) and also written quite a few articles for NP Tribune during my final year, first semester while in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Overall, I graduated with good results.
