"Ask questions and learn fast."
I believe if students start asking questions and not be afraid to attempt different question types, they will be able to learn fast. That was my style when I was a student. A little sharing on my learning style (perhaps it can help some students out here?) - I often get the materials that will be taught the next lesson beforehand, so if all possible, I would try my best to read up on some introduction and certain details of that topic. This will better prepare me for the next lesson in class as I will know what to expect and not be stunned. After a topic has been covered, I will get some practice on that topic either through school worksheets or assessment books. As the teacher moves on to newer topics, I will remind myself not to neglect older topics and do some revision by doing questions from older topics occasionally.
I also believe that the main purpose of having tuition is to clarify your doubts that you had in school and improve from there. So what are you waiting for? Get a tutor to clarify your doubts and keep on improving yourself!
A student of mine scored F9 for Pure Physics and E and A maths in his Secondary 3 end of year exam. After having tuition, he scored a C5 for Pure Physics and B4 for E and A maths in his first Secondary 4 common test. No doubt, there is still room for improvement but I believe this improvement was significant and was a motivation for my student.
Honour Roll for A Level result by scoring 6 distinctions in Nanyang Junior College. Distinction in Australian Maths Competition in Junior College. Bronze in Maths Olympiad in Maris Stella High School.
