"Teaching one how to fish rather than providing the fish"
I have around 2 years experience. In this 2 years, I have taught a total of 5 students. I prefer to focus on just a few students at a time, so that I will be able to dedicate my fullest attention on them and teach them to the best of my ability based on each individual's needs and learning capabilities. I have taught English, Mathematics and Science in Upper Primary and Lower Secondary levels. One notable achievement would be that one of my students greatly improved his Mathematics within half a year of tutoring, which I'm very proud of. Academically, I have always been doing relatively well in school; my stronger subjects are Mathematics and Science. I believe that it is important to not only teach the content, but also how to learn and study the content. Equipping students with the tools on how to study effectively will be useful throughout one's academic life, as they will learn things like studying independently, getting the most out of a study session in the shortest amount of time, and what makes an ideal study environment. Most students do not learn these tools in school; one reason being that it is different for each individual. Just as there are different learning types, different people have different ideal study methods. Based on my experience as a student, figuring out what works and what doesn't work, and along with majoring in psychology has helped me to better understand how to study efficiently. This is because psychology has allowed us to understand the inner workings of how people learn and process information in terms of memory, attention, etc. To sum it up, my aim as a tutor would be two things: to first provide the students with the tools for independent learning and help him to think by himself. This is opposed to simply providing answers without much thought but helping the student to search for the answers himself through asking questions and giving hints. Secondly, to act as a guide, correcting mistakes and providing that extra assistance when the student is stuck. I am also a patient tutor, having met several students who require more guidance to understand a certain concept. As a student myself, I also understand that it is important for a teacher to be patient. I am also dedicated and passionate to teach, as I am considering being a teacher in the future. Patience and dedication is therefore especially important being a tutor because each individual student has his/her weaknesses, strengths and personality that requires time and investment to nurture and bring out the best in them. It requires the desire to understand and treat each student as individuals so as to be able to adjust one's teaching to their needs. I believe I am in flexible in my teaching style. My strengths as a tutor as compared to other tutors or even more experienced tutors would be that I will not only be able to relate to the student due to my age, my experiences and knowledge are also up to date. I am familiar with the current syllabus as well. I will be able to communicate more effectively with younger students which will aid my teaching greatly. I believe that the ability to teach well need not depend solely on experience, as an experienced teacher may not be suitable for the student or may have inflexible, outdated and inefficient teaching methods.
